From the trailer I knew it was going to be nothing like the real Holmes--too many random explosions, so much punching!--but even granting it the weird premise that Sherlock Holmes and Watson are action detectives, I still found it tedious and poorly constructed. I know some Holmes stories did it, but a two hour plus movie is TOO LONG to leave the audience in the dark about key points, and just have one scene seem to follow another randomly, only to have a long expository speech at the end.

And I think the reason it reminded one commenter of From Hell is the RDJ was totally channeling Captain Jack Sparrow for his Holmes.

As for the slash, it was hyped as sooooo gay, it's going to be SUCH a homoerotic Holmes, and the people I was watching it with seemed to agree that there was more than the usual amount of "they're gay! see how gay they are?" implying but... I don't know... it seemed about on par with any buddy movie, to me. They seemed to lean awfully heavily on the "old married couple bickering" trope, and really, I find that to be one of the least interesting tools in the gay implication toolbox.

As it were.
