Any agent or editor would pass judgement a sight sooner than that; so I suspect would many reviewers and judges. I must confess, when three of us were judging a book of the year comp for which we had to read about 30 books, that there were a lot of novels we didn't get past 50 pages of, because it was by then obvious how good or bad a writer we had in front of us...
