Is anyone interested in a community for discussing fic? - Discussing, not reccing. They could be fics you enjoy, or not - though I'd prefer to keep it positive if at all possible. We can talk about any fic you wanna discuss;  specific fics or genres or anything, really, so long as it pertains to fic.

I read very little that's not TS but it could be as multi-fandom if that's what people wanted...?

Maybe there's already something similar out there that I've missed, but most fic-sites seem to be rec sites and that's not what I'm looking at here.

I'm just sounding this out to see if anyone's interested or has any ideas to throw into the pool.

I'd be interested, although with caveats, because 'discussion list' raises the spectre of the 'mean list' in TS fandom. Otoh, Pros fandom seems to have perfectly civil discussions about stories, so it must be possible.

Sticking with discussion of stories that readers basically liked might help keep things on track, though.

Ah, yes. I really don't mean that, I really do want it to be positive. I'm pitching it here on LJ because this seems a kinder, more civilised environment than the lists.

Hey yeah, I would be interested. Very much! If I may suggest something though... Could we make this like a book club thing? Somebody suggests a fic, then we all read it until some agreed time, and then we discuss? Gives everybody the chance to be on the same page at the same time :) Plus, with so much good fic out there, I am always happy to have somebody tell me what to read next ;-)

I quite like the book club idea. It'd give a sense of cohesion to the occasions. *g*

But that limits us to fics that few of us have read which brings it closer to a rec community rather than just discussion. Id rather keep it looser, with classic fic being read alongside newer stuff. A fic a week could certainly be a part of the thing, but I'd like to leave it open to other discussions too.

Oh, I don't think it needs to be limiting at all. Just to give people, who haven't read the fic yet, a chance to catch up so to speak, or to warm the memory up. I really love the idea of "discussing" (with absolutely no mean business happening) a fic in depth, but I think I'd mostly only feel comfortable doing that if I had just recently read it. For which I need some time. But to have a weekly "fixed" discussion item and to have the rest be free for whatever somebody wants to bring up, is totally okay with me.

I'm fine with a book club or reading circle thing as part of the whole; it's a very good idea - but I'd like the com to be open to other discussions at the same time, I think.

So, good. I think I might start working on setting this up. I just need to check one or two things first. (o:

We could include a weekly read and discuss thing, if enough people want that, but I don't want to be too limiting, and I'm thinking a lot of people will already have read the fics that get discussed. As I say, I don't want this to be a rec com - there are already plenty of those around; this is just for *talking* about fics.

I'm hoping, since most of us are writers, that if a list member's fic is up for discussion, the writer would join in and bring some insight to the talk. I'm just thinking ideas through at the moment.

i'd love to see something like this. however, i have seen similar comms on LJ which have been surrounded by controversy. one such was the_cuttingboard in SGA fandom. there was a huge amount of wank as authors found out about their fic being discussed in less than flattering terms and then there was another wank when the mod tried to come up with rules about whose stories could be recced and whose couldn't - or maybe that was another comm... it was a while ago now.

anyway, the_cuttingboard did finally come up with some rules, so maybe you'd like to check them out. i don't want to put you off, but even less would i like to see you being attacked over this (as carolyn_claire was). and i've seen how some authors don't want their fic to be discussed at all while others are okay with it as long as the comments are only positive ones.

personally, and speaking as a writer, i feel that if you're going to post a story, then you've got to expect that people will have opinions about it and not always complimentary ones.

Hmm. I'm not in SGA so I never heard about that but I will check it out. I think, on the whole, I'll have to take it as it comes. I'm never in favour of long lists of rules and regs but rather dealing with things as they crop up, but I'll take a look at their rules, see what they came up with. Ultimately, I suppose if someone is persistently negative they can be removed from the list.

I'd like to keep things positive, but I don't want to stop people being critical - I guess, like feedback, comment should be constructively critical but not negative. I don't want to see the kind of 'kick em while they're on the ground' behaviour we've sometimes had at PL.

"personally, and speaking as a writer, i feel that if you're going to post a story, then you've got to expect that people will have opinions about it and not always complimentary ones."
I totally agree and I'm fine with that so long as criticism is within reasonable parameters - and no one disses my fic and makes me cry (heh heh - naw, I think I'd be quite interested to see some critique, tbh - though I have a feeling the novelty of that could get old quite quickly *g*).

I'm hoping that, this being a lit-crit kind of a com, rather than for recs or pimping new fic, will alleviate some people's tendency to go for the jugular. ::see my insane Polyanna smile::

i'm probably being alarmist. SGA fandom seems to be one of those that is easily offended. there's been a number of wanks over trivial issues. the_cuttingboard is pretty much defunct now, but i felt that the reactions of some of the writers were out of all proportion to the level of criticism expressed in the posts.

like you, i'd welcome critical comments. it would hopefully help my development as a writer, but i've also seen some of the dissections that occurred on P-L so i know what you mean. i don't think they help anyone.

Hi gillyp,
I think this is a great idea.
Okay, I am new in LJ and I don't know all Community's, yet.
But I haven't found a community that discussed Fanfic.
::shrug:: ::sigh::
Mmh, to hold a long story short:
I would like to join, then!!

Okey dokey. I'll announce it on my lj as soon as I've set it up.

Continuing with hogging the comments, how would you like to set this up? If it's set up as a community, rather than just another lj, then you would have options of moderating members, flocking the community, leaving it public but setting the ability to comment to be only open to community members, etc. That might also tie in to Elaine's points about argybargy arising.

And heck, I can live with people discussing, and even not liking my stuff. Although I'd shed a private, single perfect tear

Lol; oh as *if* Mab, as *if*! *G*

I'm cool with being discussed too - I'd be quite interested to see uncomplimentary thoughts (but not too uncomplimentary, I hope). (o:

It was a com I was thinking of, not a new LJ and I'm thinking of keeping it pretty open for now but adding rules if they become necessary. I'm fairly tolerant but I most defo do NOT want to end up with a second Prospect L here. I'm hoping people can keep it civilised, but reserve the right to put peeps to the sword if they transgress.

Like I say, I'm still thinking it through. Nice ideas, though. I think this thing might be a goer.

I'd be interested too, though I haven't read much in TS for a while.

(I don't care for the rules of [livejournal.com profile] thecuttingboard, mentioned above, because the author isn't allowed to participate.)

posted by [identity profile] gillyp.livejournal.com at 10:23am on 22/11/2007
Ah. I haven't got around to reading their rules yet. No, no, I'm keen for the writer to participate, if they want to.

This kind of lit-crit and discussion is what I originally set my website up for but it never happened there. I'm hoping LJ might be a better place (because I do like to natter about fic. (o:) Certainly, LJ has a much greater population than the message board on my site.

incidentally, i'm trying to get this off the ground at my own com: library_alex. it's more general than TS fic, but i am trying to engender discussion. not sure if it's what people are looking for, but feel free to come by and see if it's what you're looking for.

I'd be interested, but RL being what it is at the moment I'm more likely to be a silent observer than anything. I mean look how long it has taken me to get to this post
