Three Unique things

Blaired from [personal profile] ringbark

* Post 3 things you've done in your lifetime that you don't think anybody on your friends list has done.
* See if anybody else responds with "I've done that."
* Have your friends cut & paste this onto their page to see what unique things they've done in their life.

1. Lived in Havana for 9 years.
2. Was a bridesmaid at my auntie's wedding in Darjeeling
3. Eaten Spider Monkey (under protest. )o:)

You...?

No, I haven't done any of that stuff. Never been to Cuba at all, never been a bridesmaid at all, never eaten monkey at all.
On the other hand, I have lived in Port Vila, been a best man and eaten goat, not all at the same time. Mmmmm, goat.

Goat was pretty common (but not well regarded) in Cuba, too - seen very much as austerity food. I'm a vegetarian; never had it - only ate the monkey because it was polite and when you're in the only village for miles in the middle of impenetrable rainforest, it's as well not to insult your hosts. Yes, it was the same in Vanuatu. Don't offend your host. Most of the time, it was vegetables and kava.

The South Pacific

is on my top ten wish list of places to visit. I've spent a lot of time in the western hemisphere; never been further east than Nepal.

3. Eaten Spider Monkey

How did it taste? I've eaten rattlesnake... it really did taste like chicken, lol.

Not nice!

[identity profile] gillyp.livejournal.com 2008-06-28 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Just meaty, I suppose. I'm a vegetarian; all meat tastes equally filthy to me. It was so disgustingly recognisable as the limb of this poor little monkey; it still had its hand. I was too traumatised by the whole experience, to make mental notes, tbh. *g*

You sound like you've had a *much* more exciting life than I have! Cuba always sounds beautiful to me; I'd love to go there. And oh how I'd love to see India! Half of my grad students go there and some have family; I'd have great places to stay. Well, someday...

Spider monkey? That I don't envy you.

[identity profile] shiredancer.livejournal.com 2008-06-29 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Er, I did get that right, didn't I? Darjeeling is in India? *sudden geographical misgivings* *Google, Google* Oh whew, not so dumb after all!

heh

Yup. It's in India - up in the Himalayas. It's full of wonderful hill-stations turned hotels - It was popular with the Raj who'd decamp there when the lowlands got unbearably hot - a truly breathtaking place, if you're ever looking for a cool place to visit I'd defo rec it. They grow pretty good tea, there, too. (o:

'sounds' exciting

[identity profile] gillyp.livejournal.com 2008-06-29 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
is about right. These things always sound better in the telling. My life's had its moments, for sure, but they were thinly interspersed in great sticky wodges of DULL. *g*

Well, I'd have to agree with you there (the same is very true for me)... but the art is in the spinning of the tale of those moments. I think that's a big part of leaving a legacy, and LJ is a perfect medium for recapturing memories!

well... i haven't done those things, but thanks to a lark i had on saturday, i've:

1) eaten an omelette with chop sticks,
2) aced a test on force moments/ torque that i didn't even remember taking,
3) earned a Championship Platter at Bridlespure Hunt Club for my efforts in Jumpers Classes...
