Can I please ask everyone who downloads from my website NOT to try and stream stuff because my bandwidth just can't take any more (Cap'n)!

I had no idea people were doing this - honestly, it's it's unlikely to work well anyway and though I have a pretty healthy bandwidth allocation, it's nothing like enough to allow substantial numbers of people trying to stream live vid. You have to save to disc, people, and watch on your own computer - NOT (please!) live on m'website!

Really, this is killing my bandwidth and I can't afford to buy more. If it carries on, I'll have to take the downloads page down.

Let me know if you have any problems. Thanks for your cooperation.

In case it's useful: what we do to prevent exactly this problem is put each vid file in a zip folder before uploading them. This way people can't stream, either accidentally or deliberately, and have to download so they can unzip and watch. :)

Yeah, I tried this when I started uploading and I had a load of moans that they couldn't use them, why, I have NO idea but that was why I used straightforward .wmv files - it was what most people could use most easily.

I've stuck the above message up everywhere anyone might see it in hope the people doing it are being clueless not malicious but if it carries on I willtake the age down (because it's become a bit of a pain in other ways tbh).

Thanks anyway. :o)

Really, everyone and their grandmother can unzip a file these days -- it's just because they're too bloody lazy. I always zip things that can be streamed to avoid it, and no one's ever whined about that.

And besides, if they don't listen, the ones who are doing this, you can always blame them for the fact that you'll have to zip the files...

I'm sorry - I've been guilty of this without realizing it. I don't do much downloading of video files, I'm don't get the whole bandwith thing and I really didn't realize it proved a problem. Putting a message up was a good idea.

Again, my apologies.

*pets you*

I came across a bit harshly. I know some people just aren't aware of it. I sometimes just forget that *blushes*

No worries - but it's true that some of us really don't know our asses from our elbows when it comes to online stuff. I can usually follow directions, so posting a message works for me! I really never knew, or even thought about, what happens when a video is streamed. I put most computer knowledge into a little mental file called "need to know," and for the most part, I figure I don't.

Heh, you're definitely not the only one. It's to your own advantage to download as well, if you're on a restricted bandwidth from you internet supplier. Everytime you rewatch a vid, it streams and uses up not only the website's bandwidth, but yours as well. Not all providers have a limit on what you can download/stream/bandwidth, but everything counts if yours does.

Oh gosh, it's fine, I realise the fault is mainly mine for not being clear on the site. I assumed people would know and clearly, a lot don't and... all my fault. It does finally explain the emails I've been getting about my 'faulty' files. :o) Situation dealt with and hopefully rectified. Big red tick. *g*

And there lies the rub. I'd have to re-upload every damn thing on there (and that's a lot of stuff). I'm just too damn busy and way too idle to even contemplate such a thing. *g*

Hey, I replied to your message on Storyfinders, but I don't know if you'll see it - do you mind if I forward your message to some other Sentinel lists? I'm still on PL and Sentinalia, and I'll do senad if I can ever get back on there again....

Hi hon. I've had such a busy day and in the evening I was frankly, watching telly and never made it back to LJ. I answered you message on TSSF so I suppose you already saw that and this is just so much needless babbling.

Thanks for that. I shall stop now. :o)

I have a feeling that some of this is due in part 1) to new ppl who are looking for eps. I don't know how many times i have seen requests on sentinelficfind and at tsstoryfinders for eps to the final three seasons. And 2) during chat they have been watching some of the eps, but I don't know if anyone is streaming from that bunch or not. Not pointing fingers, just giving an idea of what COULD be happening.

Personally I haven't been sticking around in chat to watch episodes with the girls. And I haven't DLed any of the eps yet, but Iplan to start DLing the second season when I get to it in my Deja Vu series. I like to have the episodes nearby that I am fiddling with so I can get the nuances and the like from the characters through the eyes of the camera.

I'm glad you have these up for us since Paramount can't get off their collective asses and give them to us.

Karie :)

Amen to that, sistah.

Yeah, I think it's more newbies. I don't suppose they're doing it maliciously, just not realising that a page headed 'Downloads' (in 48pt) is just that. Frankly I'm amazed they've been able to stream at all, it's not set up to facilitate it and probably explains a great deal the occassional emails I get telling me eps are 'faulty' and stopping part-way through.

Hey ho. I'll be monitoring it hard. If it goes on, I will take the page down. I haven't the heart or the energy to re-upload everything as a zip so if people persist despite the notice I've put up... I take no shit, you hear what ahm sayin? *g*
