Would an American say cack-handed? I suspect, probably not - in which case, what would be a similarly slangy way of saying something was clumsy, badly and/or stupidly done?

Many TIA!

Never.
Ass-backwards works, if your character would say that. Some people also say Bass-ackwards.

Oh, and among my closest work friends, it wasn't unusual to call something a clusterfuck. But never in public, obvs :)

Oh, wow! I like that a lot! but I think ass-backwards would work nicely for this character. Thanks so much! ::scurries off to edit::

In more polite company, we often say "bass-ackwards". *g*

One might also say "He's all thumbs".

You'd say "He did it all ass-backwards" because he's "all thumbs". =>}

There's no way Stuart Peace (for yea! Tis he we are speaking of) could be called 'polite company'. :o)

Since I don't know him, I'll take your word for it. *g*

After doing something ass-backwards, would he then fall "ass over teakettle"? =>}

I honestly have no idea, hon.

He's the big villain in 'Blue', the guy who wants to buy Naples. :o)

Sheesh! Well DUH! I thought it was someone from another fandom or something. Now if you'd just said, "Peace", I would've bought a clue. *g*

I can be so darned dense at times. *hangs head in shame*

I wouldn't expect you to remember, hon! He hasn't made an appearance for such a long time; I've been writing a chapter with him today, though, hence the q.

I certainly remember his last name. Guess it was the first name that threw me. =>}

Cool. You're working on BLUE! Yay! *g*

I've always used back-asswards....

I have to admit, I've never heard the phrase cack-handed. The previous suggestions work, though.

ass-backwards sounds good to me. Thanks!

I've heard "ham-handed" used in this way.

Probably not rude enough for my guy. *g* But thanks for the suggestion, hon. I think I'm going with ass-backwards

.
I've also heard ham-handed.

Depending on the sentence you're using it in, FUBAR might work. IE, "That guy's really FUBARed." (Fucked up beyond all repair.)

It's more the action than the man, so I think ass-backwards will work. Thanks anyway, hon, I'm really expanding my vocabulary today. :o)

if your char has a military background, he'd be familiar with all of the following:

SNAFU - situation normal, all fucked up
FUBAR (as starwatcher said)
TARFU

these three tend to be used in sitrep-type conversations: 'hey, Sarge, how's it going?' *shrugs* 'SNAFU. you?'

there's also:

clusterfuck (describing a situation that was very badly planned and executed)

mongolian clusterfuck - an extreme version of the above.

these two would be used to describe a specific event: 'the battle of the bulge was one hell of a clusterfuck!'

i've heard bass-ackwards and ass-backwards more from civilians and polite company, but they mean essentially the same thing.

this is probably more than you want to know, but good luck!

My character has no military background, no.

I've already changed the offending Briticism to ass-backwards - but thanks for the info anyway, I'm sure it'll come in handy one day.
