So, following on from that 100 books meme...

Name ONE book that wasn't listed that you feel should have been.

I'll kick off with The History of Love by Nicole Krauss.

Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. Such a good book, and rather creepy.

Ooh, good choice!

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. IMHO an instant classic.

Oooh.

I've never heard of that! You rec it - Give me a clue...

Ohhhh it's so good. it's about a hermaphrodite, who tells you about his family and how he became a hermaphrodite because of his genes. the good thing is that it doesn't center on his sexuality, but on how he deals with life and how he became the person he is, and not even just because of his condition. it's a really good book, about Greece and America and life in general. I really loved it

Yes! I was about to add that one.

Lanark by Alasdair Gray.

I love that book.

I remember you making a post about that some time ago. It gets very mixed reviews - sell it to me, why is it great?

[identity profile] orwellian-trash.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a book with such a wide scope it's difficult to describe why it is so good in a few words. Political and personal, realist and surreal, profound and unpretentious, Lanark is an explosion of rough genius.

Went back and re-read your post; it does sound amazing, I'll get hold of a copy and give it a go - thanks for the rec!

::mumble mumble mumble::

There was so much missing off that list it's hard to think of just one that should have been on it - like, apart from the bible there are only plays and fiction? Grrr!

I'd go for P. G. Wodehouse's Jeeves books - all of 'em... it seems only fair if we're expected to plough through the whole of the bible *g*

I love your choice btw. I haven't read it yet - but it's in my bag just waiting for me to get stuck somewhere.

PG Wodehouse! I love his books! I can't believe I didn't think of him myself. Actually, I did while I was puzzling over the list, then went blank when I saw Gilly's post about it.

Have you seen the TV series with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie? I didn't think they'd be any good, but they were brilliant (IMHO)!

LOL - I bought them on DVD for my mum - it's just her sense of humour *g* - and like you I didn't expect to like them, but ended up loving them. They're wonderful to curl up with when things get poopy *g*

I didn't think they'd be any good

[identity profile] gillyp.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I always felt they were born to play those roles. I have them all on DVD - glad to see they convinced you anyway. :o)

Oh! Oh! Oh!

PGW; the master, I'm SO not worthy! EXCELLENT choice(s) - I'll add the Psmith books too.
