He watches people and figures things out by the way they act, react, etc. He used to have a ' magic' show - fake psychic show

But yes, someone being ' mental' means the same thing here as there I'd say.

'You're a mentalist' is what kids would shout at someone being a mental. Watch the clip for an example.
