What's the average vacation time for an American university student? How long is spring break, usually, and how long the summer (is it called summer break? How would you describe that, pretty-please)?

What time of year would those 2 vacation times occur? Approx dates are fine, thankee kindly.

Many TIA my lovelies.

Uh, I'll tell you what mine was.

My spring break was one week. Normally for me it is one week to one and a half weeks. Uhm, this is around mid-April.

It's called summer vacation, I rarely hear summer break. It's about three months. This occurs differently for all people. Mine is beginning of May to about mid- end of August. Some people go from June to September...but I think mine is more common. But am unsure.

Hope that helps.

Yes, that's right. Although the spring break week can happen anytime from late March to mid-April (if finals are in early May, then the break is more likely to be in March; if finals are later in May, then there's a later spring break....) And it's definitely summer vacation. Some schools offer a summer "session" of classes, but many private liberal arts colleges are closed over the summer.

I think summer vac will be too long for our requirements. Spring break sounds just about right - many thanks (but only a week!? That's criminal! We always got 3 weeks > a month for Easter hols.

Every college, school district, state is different. Spring Break is usually a week, usually from mid-March to mid-April. It may be combined with Easter (depending on when Easter falls), which would give an extra day -- the Good Friday before the break. If a school schedules a longer break, the summer vacation is shorter -- federal law states that a school session must be 'x' days of instruction.

Summer Vacation 2.5 to 3 months, usually starting mid-May. Some schools let out later, early June, then start after labor day in September. Some let out earlier (before Memorial day, last Monday in May), then start in mid-August.

Christmas Vacation usually coincides with end-of-semester, but not always -- a few years, I had end-of semester exams to look forward to in the first week back. It runs 2.5 to 3 weeks, again depending on the school, and how early they begin/ late they end.

In other words -- there is such a variety between colleges / school systems, you can set up your fictional schedule pretty much how you want.

well, yes and no - that's quite different from a UK university year. Differently scheduled and we get longer holidays at Easter and Christmas too, which is why I wanted to check.

Spring Break would seem to suit Jim's our needs best. Many thanks for the info, much obliged. :o)

Spring break is a week -- most of the area universities have theirs mid-March but CUNY keyed theirs to Easter/Passover this year so theirs was in April. As for summer break, I'm a free woman as of mid-May, 'til Labor Day (which I think is the same as fall Bank Holiday for you). We also usually have three weeks for winter break, fwiw -- late December to mid-January. (Before Christmas, and classes generally start the day after the MLK holiday, which isn't his real birthday as it shifts and is on a Monday every year.)

Fall Bank Holiday? No - we don't have a 'Fall' for it to fit in. :o) We have Summer Holidays/Hols which generally run from June to September or early October. There's an August Bank Hol that's just one day that fals in the midst of that.

So MLK day is a moveable feast? I like that. :o)

My university is very similar to those already described. Fall semester starts mid August goes through about the second week of December, then about 3 weeks for Christmas, Spring semester starts about the second week of Jan and goes through the second week of May. Spring break is usually about a week in mid March. Spring commencement is almost always on Mother's Day in May.

Which is different again, UK MD is in March.

Thanks for the info, Spring Break seems to fit our needs best.
