Are the Jehova's witnesses on some kind of recruitment drive?

That's the second time in a week, once in Withnell, once in Yorkshire. I was, as always, firm but kind, sending them on their way with a smile, refusing to engage in metaphysical debate my Dad used to delight in. He had JW's and Mormons alike fighting to escape from him. A real talent he had for it, once upon a time.

I must say, I've never understood the logic of actively recruiting when you believe there's only so much room. Every scalp you take surely lessens your own chances of getting in. I suppose they look on it as, fresh meat = moving up the queue.

People are strange, religion more so. I'm glad I've never been troubled by such notions.

OK. I have fresh coffee and half a papaya. Making a fresh attempt on the day. Here we go. Oooh, the jasmine smells divine. (heh heh heh).

You make them sound like the fake cigar vendors of Havana. I once had one leap out at me shouting 'ceegar!' from the inside of a crocodile pen.

As for the JWs I say bring it on, baby, bring it on! I will say to them what I always do, 'Come on, let's not waste each other's time...' heh.

They get Green Stamps for converts, I think. Fill a whole book and you can turn it in for a toaster.

No, seriously, those people are everywhere and yes, it's part of their reason for being. The Mormons here even ratified a bunch of Jewish people retroatively once - as you can imagine, that was not a gesture best calculated to make friends!

I don't get the 'room' thing either and I know of someone who can't get their daughter to go to school or learn anything because she's been brought up on the whole 'the end of the world is very nigh' thing!

I asked if they wanted me to pray with them for God to reveal the Truth to them.

We never get the sweet old ladies. We get the young mothers with their mentors and young men in short sleeved white shirts with ties.

My grandfather had read the book og Mormon while in hospital recovering from his war wounds so he knew it pretty much from cover to cover. He once invited a pair of Mormon missionaries into his house and had them there for over two hours "debateing" the book and asking them questions about the founder of the church, once they left they NEVER came back. Nor were my grandparents ever botherd by Mormons again.
