Who the heck fancies writing as a career? Pterrys, for example, are few and far between, and in NZ it's always been such a tiny market that it's automatically assumed that you'll be writing in between your 'real' job.
 
Urm, well, me, actually. It's how I make my crust. :o)

Sorry. Terry P as in Pratchett. It's a fan nickname.

I guess it depends on how you define writing as a career, because that encompasses so many varieties of writing. But I think most people 'on the street' as it were think of the big A-list novels, the Dick Francises and Dan Browns (and Pterrys *g*) of this world, and that doesn't come along like no. whatever buses, that's for sure.
