Quick Question...

For a fic I'm working on; I've tried googling but I can't find a simple answer.

In the U.S. police force, what's the next step up for a Captain? If Simon were moving on in the world, what would be the next position he'd be going for?

I think I already looked at that one - I've looked at a lot of sites today and you're right, they are incredibly confusing. It's really just a teeny-tiny bit of the fic so I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist over it - I can leave it out altogether if needs be.

I was just hoping that *somewhere*, there'd be a list or something - simple answer to a simple question, you know? Hey ho...

I myself know nothing about police work, but my Long Ridge colleague Lynda Sandoval was a police officer, and wrote a great and very useful little book about what happens behind the scenes. It's called TRUE BLUE. I don't have my own copy yet, but another writer told me it's a great help in writing about police procedures.

Do you by any chance belong to the Yahoo! group fanfic_law? Someone there could probably help you. If you don't, I can ask for you; I think I have a few things of my own to ask them anyway.

For now, as much as I HATE wikipedia, its article on NYPD ranks seems to jive pretty well with what I vaguely recall from...hmm, maybe editing an SVU fic? Anyway, I figure that might give you a place to start, at least, so here's that link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NYPD#Ranks_of_the_NYPD
