In Holmfirth and Honley, sometime after I finish this massive cappuccino...

Got up at 5am to start writing again after a few days off. I got a bit lost with the story though - I'm on slightly shaky ground, not really knowing exactly where I was going with this bit. I've left my main character, Angel, having an 'episode' in front of the Aga and switched POV to Matt and his trip to the church; all I knew was Matt - the former detective - would go over to St Edmund the Martyr's to quiz the naughty vicar, which he's now done, and a new character has suddenly appeared in the form of Margaret Copperwheat. At the moment she's arranging flowers and making tea but she's already made disparaging remarks about the 'Unfortunates' - the homeless people the vicar houses in the vicarage - I wouldn't mind betting she's not as innocent as she looks.

So progress is being made but it's been slow; 1,166 words written before I decided to call it a day. 11,467 words written so far. The plot is taking its time to develop but a few mysteries have been seeded. It's coming on.

I hope your day continued as well as it started and that the house hunt, especially, was encouraging if not immediately successful!

And 1.166 words per sitting sound like a hell of a lot to me at the moment. *g* Good luck on getting Margaret to spill some more info about what she's been up to (or getting up to) soon!

The house hunt went exceedingly well thanks - the weather was gorgeous, we saw several houses in the area we've decided we like best, including one with the most amazing kitchen in a vaulted cellar.

And Margaret? Hmmm... well, she's working for the evil vicar of doom so she's clearly up to no good. Time will tell... *G*

I honestly can't see how this story can be told in less - and it's going to take some time to write. ::nods sadly:: (o:

Thanks! We've seen some really nice places today in our price range and now we're quite upbeat about the move. (o:

Hope it's going well for you, sugar. ♥

as a dedicated house-nut, what kind of house are you looking for? where? how old? layout? i love exploring houses...

We have to move to be close to Dad now because, well, he needs taking care of and it's too much for my sister to do alone.

So we're moving to Holmfirth - near to Dad and not too expensive. We're looking for a place in the centre, just for a change; living in the middle of nowhere (as we do now) has its advantages but for now, I want to be in easy walk of the bookshop, the bakery and a good coffee shop - and Holmfirth is small so even in the heart of town, you're within walking distance of moors and forests.

The houses we're looking at are pretty similar to the place we're in now, to be honest, except that, being in town, clinging to the cliff, they don't have much of a garden with them - but then we're going to be spending a lot of time at Dad's and he has half an acre, which is enough for me to play with when the urge is on me. (o:

If you're seriously interested, here's some we're looking at, especially the first.

Holmfirth looks very pretty. the places you linked to have more spacious rooms than i'm used to thinking with european houses. my head links european = old = cut up tiny rooms with not a lot of space. one thing i'm glad about is that america has lots of land available for me to buy - not so hot on neighbors right next door.

i'd like to retire to Wyoming - thinking eastern Wyoming, because western Wyoming is much pricier - on a small farm. check this out:

http://www.eaglestar.net/hth18-.html

i grew jup in a tutor-style house, and frankly, i love them. they're pretty awesome.

this is actually pretty close to what i grew up in:

http://www.houseplans.com/plan_details.asp?id=17777

this would be bloody awesome:

i'd love to have this:

http://www.houseplans.com/plan_details.asp?id=30492

or this:
http://www.houseplans.com/plan_details.asp?id=30516

cause i *love* the art gallery (but i'd totally move all the bedrooms upstairs, where they otta' be!). but as my dad always said, my eyes are bigger than my stomach, heh. the actual plans i'm drawing up are for a geodesic dome home mansion-ish thing. you can do that with 4 interconnected domes, which have basements and 2nd floors.

the dome exteriors would be similar to these:

http://www.domes.com/plans.html

but since i'd have 4, i'd vastly revamp the interiors. the domes themselves aren't that expensive, and since they can free-stand (ie, don't need interior load-bearing walls) i can design the interior anyway i want. and i'd design it to be a bit more traditional. and have one of the domes dedicated to a library. the whole dome. full of books. ::sighs happily::

um, where was i? oh yes - domes are much more energy efficient than a lot of traditional structures, except maybe adobe buildings. that's the main reason i'm think about that. i don't know if i'll manage to get improved land - ie, with power running to it, and water and cable, etc - so i may have to try to live off the grid. and even if i'm mostly on the grid, with a dome structure, i can invest in a combination of solar power and wind power energy producers to off-set the cost of operating the house.

anyway, the idea is to set up my retirement home to be as independent as possible, with modern amenities. both to show it *can* be done - and because i don't want to have to worry about major bills other than car insurance when i'm old. i'd like to pay off the house before i actually retire. it'd be nice.

-bs, excited about houses... again...

35 acres for $50,000!!! That's, what, just over £25,000! You couldn't buy a one room shed with no plumbing in the UK for that. Man. Our one and a half bedroom cottage in Lancashire is going on the market for $300,000. I'd guess the house + garden covers about 900 square feet, max.

Sheesh!

ye-ah... there are advantages to being american... :-p of course if you add a house to that the whole thing goes up enormously. the sum is greater than the total of it's parts. add a 3bed/2bath house of decent construction worth $150k, and you're talking a good $350k for the whole shebang. better/ cheaper to buy the land separate, and add a $150k house to it. it's a thing.

but i love the area out there - it's pretty isn't it? once i find a place to buy, i'll have to invite you out exploring with me.
