The huge Jim-bed we bought in America has finally come home, bless it's enormous cotton socks.
We finally decided, since no move looks imminent, to bring it from Dad's garage to the house. Mark's been anxiously pacing all morning, worrying that the matress might not fit through the doors (it did, just) or go up the stairs (it almost didn't).
We can't sleep in it yet though, because we have no bedding. We've been able to order (online - they're not the sort of thing you can pick up in Tesco) flat sheets, a duvet and cover in super-king size, but fitted sheets, a mattress cover and vallance will have to be ordered, at huge cost, from the US.
We really didn't think this thing through at all, did we?
What was once a room with a bed in it is now a bed with a room wrapped around it. Heh! No, not really, but I am glad our house has nice big rooms. *g*

Luckily, *before* her last visit, I discovered that the US post office no longer ships surface overseas. She was warned in time to only buy what would fit into her (and my father-in-law's) suitcases to bring back. But *ouch* that's going to be expensive for you -- sorry. :-(
I don't know when your MIL was doing that
The bed itself - aside from the fact you can't easily get one quite so big in the UK, cost half what a simple double-bed of that quality costs in the UK including shipping and all the extra taxes we had to pay. A bargain. *g*
The bedding place we're looking at is much cheaper than anything going in the UK - 400 count Egyptian cotton sheets for the Eastern-King bed are the same price as flannel double bedding in the UK. The shipping's not so bad as I expected so... I'm being philosophical about it (and it is a splendid bed - if not really designed to fit in the average British house). *g*
Re: I don't know when your MIL was doing that
Our experience was that the bargain $200 quilt she bought (which yes, probably would have cost 200 pounds, which for convenience sake we think of as double, since my husband still thinks in pounds after all these years) cost $75 to ship surface -- so with shipping it became still under 3/4 what it would have cost her, but wow that's a lot on postage. I can't even imagine what it would cost to ship air. But companies who do a fair amount of business no doubt have easier/cheaper ways of sending things.
Susan has been nervous about the dollar going up and how that will affect their next trip here in December. They've been lucky so far because the weak dollar has pretty much exactly coincided with our marrage and thus the time they've been coming over. But I don't think the US economy is recovering anytime soon, so I think she's pretty safe.

LOL.
It's been quite a saga. (o: If you ever buy such a bed, be sure it'll fit in a Belgian house. It fits in ours (but honestly, only just O:!) *g*
Re: LOL.
i've another three years beforeI needto worry about that though.

Oh my! How the hell did you manage to get that in there? ::squints::
Have to agree with you about buying stuff in America too - the best towels I've ever owned are American - half the price and a zillion times better quality than any I've found here. Hmmm - must go back and get some more - what? It's a good excuse!
I can't think of any non-smutty sounding way to wish you fun and good nights in your new bed *g*

It sleeps five easily. I suspect that's not what you meant... heh heh.

How do you think you'll like sleeping in different zip codes?*g*

Ha, we do not have Zip codes so it's not a problem! (heh heh).

I have a queen-siz bed (and just for me, I'm single but like a lot of room) and am now officially jealous.
and am now officially jealous.
It is an absuredly big bed. I'm not very big, even, though Mark is relishing the chance to sleep without his feet sticking off the end.

Say... it sounds like you've already figured out everything re: shipping, but if not, you know I'd be more than happy to bring stuff over when I come in a month and a half or so... if that would be cheaper for you than shipping...
Ooh.
Otoh, the company we were going to buy from is saying they no longer ship internationally - if you couldn't bring it, would you be able to post stuff to us and we'd pay you whatever that costs? But not if it's a problem - I mean, it's kind of you to offer but I don't wanna take advantage so do say no if it's not possible.
Re: Ooh.
But I'd be MORE than happy to accept stuff here and send it on to you, that would be no problem at all! Drop me an email at jsnyder at snycock dot com if you need my mailing address, and just give me an idea of when we might expect it to arrive so I'll be looking out for it (and we're gonna be out of town Sept 20-27th)

Yep, huge, nice, comfy, toe keeping warm bed - but what is that by the side of it, bottom right of the picture?
I'm intrigued!
LOL!
It's the weirdest thing - when we came home from Cuba, the tennants (the people who were renting the house, ie, not a family called the Tennants) had done a runner, leaving the house a filthy slum piled high with their rubbish including a pair of Fidel Castro slippers. How very ironic. *g*
Couldn't bear to bin them - they were stuffed under the old bed and got shifted to one side to accomodate the new one. Their appearance in the picture is purely coincidental. (o:

I'm sorry, I always seem to notice things like that :oD
