Post the first line from your 25 most recent fanfics and try to find a pattern.
Well, I don't have 25 fics. I think it's pretty well established by now that I write very few, very long stories, but adding in some ageing tales from another fandom, I can bump it up to 15 which is a reasonable writing sample.
telesilla's adding last lines now, too, and I say, why not indeed?
And LJ still won't let me post urls under any circs that I can work out so I''ll just have to say - all the ASJ stuff is here:

And all the Sentinel fics are here:

ASJ Fic. Gods, it's years since I read any of these. I'm slightly scared of reading them again in case they turn out to be not very good. *g*
A Safefull of Diamonds - my first ever fic! ::sigh::
1st. "Hotchkiss, Johnson Alexander Hotchkiss."
last. "I never cease to be a wonder to myself Kid. Anyhow, with twenty eight thousand dollars in our saddlebags, keeping money I won at poker, and on a Sunday too - why that just seemed downright sinful..."
Columbine
1st. His horse was slowing under him, that much he knew.
last. "Outta this business!"
Happiness was born a twin
1st. Kid turned the key in the lock, put the bottle of whisky he was carrying on the dresser and ran his fingers through his hair with a tired sigh.
last. last. Only when he was finally satisfied that everything had been prepared for their safety and an easy getaway - should one be necessary, did he blow on the lamp and put out the light.
Let's Fight Till Six:
1st. Hannibal Heyes opened his eyes.
last. "Yeah, Heyes, I just might do that."
The Two Brave Prospectors of Welcome Valley - partly written in the style of a Dime Novel. Definitely wins the prize for 'most fun had whilst writing a fic'.
1st. The train lurched, throwing Kid Curry clean out of a beautiful dream about a deep, grassy meadow, a summers day and a kiss with a girl with golden hair.
last. "You want a miracle like that, reckon the best place to find it's in the pages of a dime novel."
Bad Meets Evil - has Eminem in it!
1st. Six men rode into town; trail-worn, dusty, unshaven, dog tired, and very hungry.
last. "Can't be two sheriffs in the world named Curt Clitterhouse."
Watchers of the NIght
1st. Hard, cold sunlight hit his eyes. He was awake in a heartbeat, hand flying to his gun which was laying on the table beside him as it always did when he slept.
last. That's all I'm promising to do. I'll think about it."
Jumping Frog - Still one of the best things I ever wrote, I think.
1st. I never much minded having only dull or drunken folks to talk to. It's having just myself for company that I find insufferable, Heyes thought as he watched the saloon girl - Viccy, was it?
last. "Well amen to that!" Heyes said, clamping a hand on Kid's shoulder and steering his friend down the street.
The Gift - shades of crossover creeping in here with Sheriff Ellison and Deputy Sandburg.
1st.The horse wandered down to the stream.
last: With a smile for his friend, he said; "Reckon, we just didn't know it at the time, is all."
TS Fic.
The Sentinel Affair.
1st: Cold. Oh man, it's so cold!
last: Cold and wet is my world man, cold and wet is my world (you know, as I add in last lines here, I am starting to see something of an obsession with cold weather. Heh!)
Chasing Rainbows
1st. All my life I've been chasing rainbows. - Heh! ::snort!::
last: Let's go home.
Wind Whispering
1st. Jim took a deep breath, stepping out on to the porch of his cabin.
Last. Ok then man, let's do it.
Alpha and Omega
1st. Panic had seized Carthage.
Last. “Alpha and Omega,” Blair sighed, reaching up to caress his lover’s bristled face with his dusty palm, stopping his words with another kiss; sweet and deep and so full of love, Jim thought his heart would stop with the beauty of it. (aw! *g*)
A Child of God
1st. Whenever he asked, I'd tell him the well-worn story; how I'd been hitching my way west, gotten abandoined in Lincoln, Nebraska, so heavy with him on the way I could barely move.
Last. I know Jim witll be there to catch me.
Angel Dust
1st. This world was cold, crystaline, magical; a land of blue ice, white snow and the filtered light of a weak sun that danced in misted beams between sparkling, frosted trees.
Last. It was good to be warm again, to be home. (urm, OK. I give in, there are patterns! *g*)
And, if it's not cheating, here's the first line of a 2/3 completed WIP I'm writing on a closed com for some Moonridge winners.
Blue
The song looped through his mind; like a jammed faucet, incessant and unstoppable as his day ended the way every day ended for him now; lying wide-awake at three am, brain buzzing, exhausted, but unable to sleep, as the events of his day, his year, his life, twisted and turned in his mind, mocking him with the mistakes he’d made, all the wrong turns and bad decisions that had led him here, to this narrow bed in this little room in the dorms of the Washington State Police Academy.
Gosh. That's a long one! *g* - No last line yet.
Well, that was an amusing stroll down memory lane but patterns? Well, five begin in first person. Two of them mention the cold - and WW goes on to mention the cold in the next line - and thinking about it, the Two Brave Prospectors has a snowstorm - so maybe I have a thing for weather? I saw no patterns till I started doing last lines too, then it started to get embarrassing.

Too cool for subject
You like first person too, yes?
It's one groovy meme.
I'm really enjoying this meme. I've read three new fics from favourite writers on the strength of 1st lines, and I just re-read Jumpin frog, an old fic from my ASJ days and - gosh, it needs a beta! But not a bad story at all (hey, false modesty, who needs it? *g*)

I'm just got back from a crips, beer and chocolate run to the local Londis. I have plans to read new fic all afternoon and that requires sustainance of the junk kind. ::nods::
