...No one's mentioned David Tennant's astonishing performance as Russell Brand, the Ghost of Christmas Present on the Catherine Tate show last night but there you go. Anyone listen to them on Radio 2 this morning then with the Most Holy Lord Bernard of Cribbins...?

Doctor Who was pure hilarious crack, I have rarely laughed so long or hard - which was good. Our home now has a new line, 'he ate it like The Master' - only used on the dog so far but we eagerly await the chances to broaden that scope.

So, good Christmas, everyone? We still have snow. Dad is going to 'dine' (the way The Skeletor Master 'dines') with his brothers today, he's been in the bathroom a mere 2 and a half hours but still hoping to have him at at least the underpants layer before my cousin comes to get him at 3.00.

Other than that, it's been relatively calm and unfraught. I now own an ipod and a goodly pile of DVD-based comedy and a bottie of delicious hard stuff. I'm now off to make sosmix rolls, please wish me well in my culinary endeavours and have a lovely Boxing Day all!

...Which was unavailable in my local health food store recently, thereby thwarting my plans for Christmas dinner! Bassstids! :)

And re: your icon, isn't Alan B a pescetarian, not veggie?

PS merry yuletide to you too. ♥

Like [livejournal.com profile] gillyp says, someone who consumes a mostly vegetarian diet but does eat fish. I think it's on the grounds that fish are different in some way from regular cows and sheep... I used to know a lady who was pescetarian back in the day on the grounds that cows and sheep are factory farmed but fishermen and women had to actually go 'hunt' the fish, although of course most fish are raised in fishfarms these days. I know another guy who eats fish on the grounds that they have a different nervous system than your average mammal and don't suffer as much, although as a vegetarian myself, I personally wouldn't like to be suffocated to death, as most fish are when they are caught. I do think that fishing is less environmentally unfriendly in terms of deforestation and methane production than the farming of cows and sheep, so I guess there is some kind of point there, although personally I wouldn't eat fish in a million years on ethics grounds and I think pescetarians are a bunch of fence-sitting wussies. :)

Yes. Only you put it more politely than I do.

There are also strong environmental reasons for not eating fish. Fish farms are highly damaging. Sea fish are hugely overfished - not to mention the polluting super-tankers that scoop every living thing they get close to including dolphins and don't get me started on whales.

I thought fish were whacked over the head... or does the suffocation happen by having them overcrowded on the boats?

I think farmed fish are sprayed with pesticides and such, so I think it pollutes quite a bit, and they're in their pens so tightly that there's a concentration of refuse. Not pleasant.

We have a couple goats and some chickens, but they're happy, and will have had pleasant lives at the end of them.

Yes, i find it strange to be selectively vegetarian. I prefer to eat meat, but make as many better choices about it as possible, including raising my own.

If you think about the thousands of fish ships scoop out of the ocean, how would they whack them on the head? No, they die slowly of suffocation.

I guess I'm just thinking of much smaller operations... that's disgusting!

Yeah, I couldn't get actual sosmix anywhere this year, wonder if they've stopped making it? I used granose sausage mix which looked and tasted exactly the same.

Re the icon, yeah, he still proudly calls himself veggie but I heard on Twitter that he's eating fish now. I'm planning on replacing him with Russell Brand as soon as I get around to it. :o)

Happy New Year! ♥

Is it... good?

posted by [identity profile] gillyp.livejournal.com at 12:59pm on 30/12/2009
It's delicious. I like to add a pinch of nutmeg, powdered bay and sage and a dash of black pepper to it, but it's good just as it comes, too.

Does it actually taste like sausage?

I really couldn't tell you, it's been 35 years since I ate any. I hope not! Meat tastes and smells disgusting to me, sosmix is good.
