I just got the renewal notice; it's gone up again and the current exchange rate means it's going to cost me over £100 to keep it on for another year  and I'm wondering what to do. TBH, I've pretty much lost interest in the thing. The message board is moribund, the chat has moved on. Aside from the downloads, practically no one visits it anymore.

I could get free-space and move a lot of the text-based stuff there but obviously, if I did that, the galleries and the downloads would have to go.

So, I suppose what I'm asking is, does anyone really care? Would it be massively missed if it disappeared, because I admit, I'm tempted to just let it go.

ETA. Looking at the comments, it does seem all anyone's really interested in is the fate of the downloads. Maybe some other arrangement can be made to host these on another website (though be aware that it requires a lot of memory and bandwidth)? It does look like the rest of the site can go because it doesn't seem  that anyone will miss it at all.

I'd move to a free site if you wanted to keep what you can.

A free site wouldn't accommodate the downloads which seems to be all anyone cares about. I might shift my fic and some of the other stuff to a free site ::shrug:: I just don't know.

If it helps, hon, I have plenty of web space you could use? It's paid up through till March 2010, and you're welcome to use it till then. Whether I renew it after that I don't know, but at least you could keep the galleries/downloads/whatever else you wanted until then...?

I might take you up on that for the downloads, if you're sure about that. It uses a lot of space, hosting the dl's and you get nothing but grief for it. Honest to God, you should see some of the emails I get, the sense of entitlement in some people... sheesh. *g*

TBH, I've thought of noting else all night. It's sad to see the old place go but it's never really been what I intended and, dls aside, it's utterly moribund; unwanted and unloved and I think I've made the decision to let it go.

If you're serious about the dl's, let me know and I'll see what can be done about it (but think long and hard before saying yes, I mean it *G*) Why people can't just dl and burn them to disc for themselves I just don't know.

I'd hate to see it die - but on the other hand a hundred quid is a lotta dosh, and there be other ways and means to do things...

I hate to see it die too, it's breaking my heart because I have a lot of love and history tied up in that websiyte but tb totally h, it's been dead for a long time. The only bit that's still alive is the dl page and that makes me miserable. I've been feeling more than a bit taken for granted over it all and thinking of ditching it all for some time. This has just precipitated the decision, really but - yeah, it's making me very, very sad, but then it has been for awhile and it'll probably be a relief when it's over. :o)

Eh, it's a quandary. I imagine maintaining the downloads is a pretty thankless task, although I know from coomments I see here and there that a lot of people use them. £100 is a lot, though, if your heart's not in it.

I heartily recommend Rhianne as a mistress, um, er, I mean webmistress ;-)

You can't begin to imagine, really, you should see the emails I get sometimes - but then, knowing tsome members of this fandom, you can probably imagine only too well. *g*
It's not just the money, I've been feeling more than a bit taken for granted about it for some time now. No one ever goes here aside from the dls and the sense of entitlement about those bloody episodes beggars belief. I think it'll be a masive relief when it's gone, tbh. ::sigh::

I'll chat to Rhianne about hosting the dls, though she should know in advance, it's a massively thankless task

::is feeling incredibly sad about it all::

I would miss it but that's quite a lot of money. Tough decision either way :(

Sorry if you're one of the very few who do actually use it, hon but in all honesty, I'm really tired of hosting the downloads - which is all anyone seems to care about it, not a single poster has mentioned any other aspect of the site. It's a lot of time and trouble, particularly having to respond to the many rude and snotty emails I get and the more I think about it, the more relieved I'll be when it's gone.

FWIW, I'm grateful for your site, and have made use of the downloads. I think it's worth a lot more than 100 pounds to the community; whether it's worth more to you, of course, is a different matter.

I'm glad you've enjoyed the site but it's not just about the money, the only thing anyone has mentioned is the downloads - no one seems to care much about the site as a whole and the downloads bring me nothing but sadness and grief. I might move the reports and my fic to free space but unless anyone else wants to take on the thankless task of hosting the eps and the rest, I'm afraid they'll be coming down with the rest of it in the new year.

Sorry.

especially the downloads, which is a brilliant thing in a fandom where the darned production company isn't getting the dvds out to the fans
! (gr, still bitter paramount!)

At any rate, the price does seem pretty steep there. I use Angelfire, and while I only have a small site, it's just five bucks a month (roughly 2poundfifty). I know it's a bit more for more space and bandwidth, but you might want to check it out

good luck!

I've looked into cheaper hosting but they all charge by the space you use. I don't know if you're aware of the sheer magnitude of memory and bw it requires to host 3 seasons of TS + all the other stuff on that page - it would end up costing me a LOT more than powweb are charging me. Powweb are the cheapest and they offer such a lot of webspace and bw for the money.

But it's not just about the money, it's also about time and stress and the fact that it's such a thankless task and I feel utterly taken for granted and - I've lost interest and I just don't want to do it anymore.

I'm sorry that a lot of people are going to be saddened by its loss but you know, almost everyone's capable of donloading those files and burning them to discs themselves. It's what I would have done, myself.

I'm looking into re-hosting the downloads and moving my fic and stuff to free or cheaper space, but he site as it currently stands will be coming down on January 10th. Sorry.

edited for html craziness.

I know that the downloads are used - they're mentioned quite often when new people say that they're looking for episodes. Otoh, 100 quid is a *lot* of cash for you to provide a public service. No easy answers, I'm afraid.

Well, yeah, I know everyone values the downloads and only the downloads which is a large part of my discontent and pique. *g* I never set out to host a site that was just about the episodes. It was originally about fic, supposedly I was going to play host to lots of authors and the point of the message board and chatrooms were for writerly and ficcish discussions that never happened and... ::sighs heavily::

It's a thakless task, everyone takes it all for granted and I'm just fed up of it, you know?

Your site is really helpful and I visit it from time to time not only to download, but to read as well. I'm not sure how you could do it, but maybe everybody who download can donate some money to keep site running?

The fic and reports and stuff, I'll be moving to a cheaper host. It's the downloads that cost all the money and I just don't want to do it any more. I'm sorry that people are going to be inconvenienced and sorry to see them go but - I can't afford the time and I certainly can't afford the money any more. I don't think donations would work. I'm looking into re-hosting the dls somewhere else - if I can find someone who wants to take on this frankly thankless task.

But the site as it currently stands is coming down. I'm sorry about that but I think it'll be a relief to me when it's gone, tbh.

I'm pretty darn sure you've got other things you can use that £100 for! Maybe a cheaper site or a free site would be the answer. It would definitely solve your streaming worries.

I think so too, hon. *g*

Tbh, it's not just the money, it's the stress and grief and sense of being continually taken for granted and it's been niggling at me for quite some time. Should it stay or should it go? I've thought of nothing else all night long - given me a massive headache it has - but the more I think about t, the more relieved I think Ill be when it's gone.

It would definitely solve your streaming worries.
Yeah. You should see what I've been charged for all that. ::roll::

can't we all donate or something to keep the site going? I really would hate to lose the downloads as I don't have my external hard drive yet and only have season one still.
HOwever. I do understand the money situation. It it tight for folks all over.
If it isn't too much of a bother why not take [livejournal.com profile] rhianne up on her offer until we can help you get the monies together.

I really don't think donations would work and I'm not sure I want to get into that. It's not just about the money, it's a whole lot of other stuff that have been getting me down about that site and people's attitudes to it that have led me to view it all so negatively. I's become a constant thorn in my side, tbh and the more I think about it, the happier I think Ill be when it's gone.

If I can find someone who's willing to take on the thankless, grief-filled task of hosting such a huge wad of vid, then I'll happily transfer them, but I'm afraid I've made the decision to let the site lapse and it will be coming down on January 10th next year.

I really would hate to lose the downloads as I don't have my external hard drive yet
Why not burn just them to dvd? It's what I do with everything I dl but want to keep.

Yeesh, that's a lot - I didn't realize this was costing you so much. I love having all my fic together on your site (in a theoretical way, since I haven't done much lately in the way of sending you stuff), but I do feel less needy now that I can put it all at ASR3 (again, in a purely theoretical way since I'm just as behind uploading there). So I definitely wouldn't want you paying that much just for that.

The downloads are really popular and recommended a lot, but that's still an awful lot of money for you. I'd vote for trying to find a cheaper option. How much memory and bandwidth does it take? Because Jason and I have a site that is doing absolutely nothing right now. I might need some technical help with the uploading and all, but it's possible that we could host them.

I'm also happy to help with the taking down and putting back up, if you decide to do that somewhere else.

The fic and the reports are safe, I can move elsewhere, somewhere cheaper or even - O:! - free. :o) It's the add-ons and the downloads that cost the money. The chat and the message board and the interactive stuff are dead, no one's gonna miss them when tey're gone. The downloads are, to be frank, a continuous thorn in my side. People have such an attitude about them, like I'm making such a load of dosh from them, you know? ::roll:: I've mused on dropping the site for some time, as you know, and every time I moot this the only thing anyone cries out about are the blasted downloads and - I'm fed up with it.

If you think you'd enjoy hosting them, you're more than welcome babe. It does require a lot of web-space and you'll need to keep an eye on your bandwidth but, if you want to take on the thankless task you're more than welcome. Rhianne's also offered space - maybe between us we can work something out.

As for the rest of the site, I had terrific joy from it in the early days but in all honestly, things haven't worked out with it the way I wanted and some of what's happened has caused me enormous hurt. I'm sorry some people will be sad to see it go but I really think I'll be a much happier person when it is no more.

I have enjoyed your site over the years. The downloads, the fic, the galleries, but that is one HECK of a lot of money! I see others have given you suggestions. I hope something works out for you that doesn't cost so much.

I'm glad you've enjoyed it, babe and I'm sadder than sad to see it go but go, I think, it must.

The text-based stuff can be moved to new space. It's things like the chat room and interactive and most of all, the downloads that cost the money and - it's not just about the £, if I were still enjoying it, the money wouldn't matter, but I'm not and I think it will be a relief to see it go.

I don't want you to think fic is without value! But I pretty much assume that everyone posts things multiple places...

Have you had any legal-type hassles with the downloads?

Seriously, if you'd posted about this before I wrote a whole pile of checks last week early to get them off my plate before going away this week, I'd have had $150 to send you. But I'm sensing you really want to be out of this aspect of fandom; and while I can program html, every time I try to deal with hosting and all that I end up in tears... (And my font here is about 5 point so I have no clue what I've written so far!)

Like I say, it's not just about the money - the increased costs have just distilled a whole slew of discontent I've been harbouring over the site and the way it's used for a long time. I really don't want people donating money, that's not my beef at all! If I still cared and still wanted to do this, the £££ would make no difference, I'm just tired of the whole business, it's nothing but a massive headache and brings me nothing but unhappiness.

There are no legal issues, no.

As I've said to many people, it's not hard to save a download and burn it to a dvd. It's what I suggest to everyone if they want to keep the files to watch over and over. It's what I do.
